MS-101 TRACE MOISTURE SENSOR

The sensor consists out of a round glass body. On the glass body are two electrodes located in a defined pattern. Depending on the sensor type these electrodes are either made from thin platinum or rhodium wire. Between these electrodes an even layer of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is applied. The sensor current causes the water contained in the acid to dissociate into hydrogen and oxygen. The result of this process is P2O5 (phosphorous pentoxide). P2O5 is a highly hygroscopic substance which strongly absorbs water vapor from the surrounding. Through continuous dissociation of the water, an equilibrium builds up between the water vapor content of the sample gas and the water which is dissociated. The electrolytic current is proportional to the water content of the sample gas and is displayed on the instrument readout after being processed by the instrument signal amplifier.

This principle of measurement can be used on all gases except those which chemically react with phosphoric acid or polymerizes.
